Artist Bio:

Shubhankar Chandere is a visual artist and art educator whose practice spans printmaking, drawing, and painting. His work critically examines the complex intersection of human geography, ecology, and land exploitation, capturing the tangible tensions between natural landscapes and urban expansion.

Chandere holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the University of Hyderabad and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune. His research-driven artwork has been showcased at prominent platforms, including the Kochi Students' Biennale and Google Arts & Culture, as well as in contemporary galleries like Vida Heydari Contemporary. Alongside his active studio practice, he contributes to art education by teaching design and visual arts at leading universities in Pune, India.

Artist Statement:

Shubhankar Chandere's practice investigates the intersections of labour, caste, ecology, and lived experience through a deeply poetic visual language. Beginning from memory and observation, his paintings explore how systems of power become inscribed upon bodies—human and more-than-human alike.

His work examines the relationship between labourers and their labour, attending to care, endurance, aspiration, and the emotional economies embedded within everyday survival. For Chandere, the body extends beyond the human to encompass land, animals, plants, water, stone, and mountains, positioning all forms of life within shared structures of vulnerability and resistance.

Working through painting alongside collected materials and physical traces, he reveals the violence of extractive economies and ecological destruction while questioning the hierarchies that position humans above the natural world. His practice unfolds as an ongoing inquiry into the poetics of suffering, where memory, labour, and landscape become interconnected sites through which social inequalities and ecological crises are simultaneously made visible.
