Sewali Deka is an artist from rural Assam whose practice is shaped by her upbringing in an agrarian community. She holds a BFA in Painting from Guwahati University and an MFA from Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. Bridging her identity as both artist and farmer, her work reflects rural life, indigenous food cultures, and traditional craft practices, often engaging community-based approaches across installation, film, and photography.
Rooted in lived experience, Deka's practice explores memory, ecology, and the transformations of rural knowledge under urban and environmental pressures. Collaborating with farmers, women, and artisans, she documents and sustains endangered practices and oral histories. Informed by feminist and indigenous perspectives, her work connects land, labour, and legacy, positioning art as a space for care, resistance, and collective memory.
