Artist Bio:

Dipankar Panging is a contemporary artist from Assam. He has a Master’s of Fine Arts from Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan. Concerns for the environment, and community have led him to delve into the technique of recycling, exploring it as a concept as well as a means of creating a sustainable art practice. He now lives and works in his hometown in Sivasagar, Assam, engaging with different traditional art practices of his Mishing tribal culture. His work has been displayed at various exhibitions, including ‘Work in Progress’, Khoj International Artists’ Association, New Delhi (2021); and ‘Apotheosis’, Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata (2019), among others.

Artist Statement:

Dipankar Panging's practice is grounded in the weaving traditions, ecological knowledge, and material culture of the Mishing community in Assam. Working across textiles, installation, participatory practice, and material transformation, he investigates how memory is woven through landscapes, objects, and collective acts of making.

Responding to the changing ecology of the Brahmaputra River, Panging combines traditional weaving practices with discarded textiles, bamboo, plastic waste, and found materials to explore questions of environmental change, displacement, and cultural continuity. His projects emerge through sustained collaboration with communities, foregrounding making as a shared social process rather than an individual artistic gesture.

For Panging, weaving functions simultaneously as craft, archive, and methodology—a means of recording relationships between people, place, and ecological systems across generations. His installations create spaces where traditional knowledge enters into dialogue with contemporary concerns, proposing acts of repair, remembrance, and collective imagination amidst rapidly transforming environments.
